ScienceWithoutBias recognizes that education is vital to fostering inclusivity and equity in healthcare and biomedical fields. To empower the next generation of leaders, we offer virtual courses and webinars designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of whole-person, culturally sensitive care. Our programs feature esteemed speakers from diverse backgrounds and provide hands-on opportunities for students to develop research intuition and engage in investigative projects, equipping them with the tools to challenge bias and drive meaningful change.

Whole-Person Care and Culturally Sensitive Healthcare Course

Join ScienceWithoutBias for an engaging online course focused on promoting whole-person care and culturally sensitive healthcare practices! This 6-week program immerses students in key concepts, challenges, and innovations within inclusive healthcare. By the end of the course, participants will have the foundation to design their own advocacy or educational initiative to address healthcare inequities. Who:

This course is designed specifically for middle and high school students passionate about improving healthcare systems and learning how to advocate for inclusive, patient-centered care. Students of all backgrounds are welcome. We encourage participation from students interested in driving change in healthcare equity and developing actionable solutions as well as students who are interested in biomedical research as this course will teach them to dig deeper into the complexities.

What:

The "Whole-Person Care and Culturally Sensitive Healthcare Course" is a 6-week virtual program. Sessions will be held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Each week, students will explore topics related to healthcare equity and learn from leading professionals and researchers. Students will collaborate in groups to create a presentation addressing a weekly challenge question and receive feedback.
The course culminates with students presenting their own solution-focused project, such as a community program, advocacy campaign, or educational resource. The group with the most innovative and impactful proposal will win a prize!

Expert-led lecture introducing the week's topic and a guided healthcare challenge question. Students will engage in Zoom breakout rooms to brainstorm ideas for their Friday presentation.

Guest speaker presentation on inclusive healthcare practices and Q&A. Group collaboration to prepare a 5-10 slide presentation addressing the weekly challenge.

Group presentations followed by peer feedback and advice from course leaders.

  • Explore how to frame impactful research questions and investigate deeper connections between health outcomes and social, cultural, and biological factors.

  • Understand the role of inquiry and curiosity in advancing equitable healthcare.

Week 4: Tackling Health Disparities and Bias in Medicine

Week 5: Community-Based Healthcare Solutions

Week 6: Final Presentations

  • Teams will propose a solution or initiative inspired by the course topics.

During Week 6, student groups will present their own research proposals inspired by topics covered in the course. The ScienceWithoutBias judging panel will evaluate each project to select the most comprehensive and innovative proposal, with the winning team receiving a special prize!
